Data and sources

Starix uses a fixed version of an astronomical catalogue. Data does not change during a game and is not downloaded from external services.

Celestial atlas

d3-celestial, Olaf Frohn — constellation boundaries and lines, stars, names, Bayer designations and all 110 Messier objects. Version: 7e720a3de062059d4c5400a379146a601d9010e0. Coordinates: J2000.

The original sources include XHIP / Hipparcos, the Davenhall and Leggett constellation boundary catalogue (VizieR VI/49), cross-reference catalogues of stellar designations, and the SEDS Messier catalogue. Serpens is treated as one territory with two parts.

Accepted answers

Accepted answers include names and Bayer designations with known positions in the selected catalogue version, and Messier designations M1–M110. In the Messier category, use the numerical designation (e.g. M 42); in the Bayer category, use a Greek letter or its written name, with a superscript number and constellation name when needed. For named stars, use the proper name.

Different designations of the same object count as one answer. For extended objects, the catalogued centre is checked; for M102, this edition uses NGC 5866. Position tolerance is selected before the game and applies equally to both players.
